By any chance, did this happen after a period of inactivity?  In other words, had the browser session been sitting open for several minutes before you clicked on the System Admin link?  Just wondering if you close the browser and tried again, does it work?

Answer 2

No, it happened first thing after opening the main default.aspx page. I tried it repeatedly with new browser sessions with no success.

Answer 3

I went back through the configuration manager and setup a new web  site/application but still get the same error on the System Administration link. My company has a real need for this technology and I would like to show our managment how it could work with our data. We have an SAP implementation that just started but there's a real gap around MDM and integration between systems. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Mark

Anyone?

Answer 5

You only mention the Sysem Admin link.  Are you able to navigate to any other areas of the app from the Home page?  Explorer, Version Mgmt, etc?

Answer 6

Yes the other links work just fine.

Answer 7

The Explorer link is greyed out. I guess b/c there's nothing to explore?

Answer 8

The Explorer link is enabled after you select a Model and a Version from the dropdown lists on the Home page.

Answer 9

Denise,

I selected the 'Metadata' model and version 1 and the explorer link is working. What is the Metadata model? Some kind of out-of-the-box example? I guess it really doesn't matter I still the the System Admin link to work so I can define my own model.

thanks,

Mark

Answer 10

Hi Mark,

The Height variable in the MDS pages is gathered on the MDS Home page via a request  to your browser.  Did you get any Script Errors or yellow warning icons on the lower left corner of your browser during the initial MDS home page load?

Thanks
Nick

Answer 11

No, it looks like it loaded clean.

Answer 12

Ok, let's take a look at some IIS settings then.

I'd like to validate that ASP.NET Session state is turned on for the hosting IIS website as well as the MDS web  application.  Can you do the following on the Web server  hosting MDS?

-Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools
-Launch The Internet Information Services Manager
-Expand the Sites node on the left-hand tree
-Select the site hosting MDS
-Click the Session State Feature from the main panel
-Validate that it is indeed Enabled and set to In Process
-Repeat the previous two steps for the MDS Web application  node

Please let me know the outcome of this.

Thanks
Nick

Answer 13

To address your question about the Metadata model:  It is automatically installed when you create your MDS database.  It gives you a way to associate user-defined metadata with MDS objects (models, entities, attributes).  We do provide some sample models which you can install using the Model Deployment feature in System Administration.  The files you need are located in \Microsoft SQL Server\Master Data Services\Samples\Packages.

Answer 14

I tried it in Firefox and it works! So I'm guessing it's some enhanced security setting in IE8 causing the problem?

Answer 15

When it was failing, were you using IE7 or IE8?  Can you try to run the page in Compatibility Mode to see if that makes a difference?  To do this, you click the icon on the address bar with the rip through a small document.

here is an IE blog on the topic, illustrating it: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/08/27/introducing-compatibility-view.aspx

Thanks
Nick

Answer 16

There's a few interface errors that occur with IE 8. I've been running it under compatability view. A lot of the interface bugs have gone away.

Answer 17

After setting IE8 to "Display all websites in Compatibility View" the mds  home site will not render in the browser at all. It just says "waiting for..." and "connecting". There is no error  it just seems to be hung up.

Answer 18

From my testing with both IE 7&8 and Firefox there are too many UI bugs for any kind of useful experiment with MDS.

Answer 19

Hi MarkW12345,

Sorry for the late reply.  I'm sorry that didn't solve your problem.  Did you happen to turn off Enhanced Security for your IE 8 install to see if that solved your problem?  You mentioned it above, but didn't indicate if you tried it.

Thanks
Nick

I did as below:

Tools -> Internet Options,
Then go to security Tab and select "Trusted Sites".
I added MDS site here.  Make sure "custom level" setting has "Java script" enabled.

This worked fine for me in IE8.

Have a try!!

Answer 23

Hi,

My Error got solved by changing the Managed Pipeline Mode from Integrated to Classic in the IIS application  pool.
