Thanks for posting. The only way we could customize Backstage view in Office 2010 is to use Ribbon XML. However, by using Ribbon XML, there is no a way to use WPF control. This is what I know. So, it is right that WPF control could not be
used in Backstage view.
For your second question, as far as I see, the only way to customize Backstage view is to use Ribbon XML. And all resources on this topic are doing so. For these resources, please see as below:
